What’s the story?Manchester United have reportedly agreed to sign Raphaël Varane from Real Madrid, for a world record fee of €60 million (for a defender). According to Spanish news outlet Don Balon, Manchester United have already concluded negotiations with Real Madrid over the defender and have begun formalities with player’s agent for the summer move.

In case you didn’t know..Rafael Varane got his breakthrough at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho, but has not made the impact at Madrid most expected of the Frenchman. He has suffered through various injuries this seasons which has limited his playing time in the first team.
The centerback has played just 19 games this season in the La Liga, which is not a flattering number given he is 24-years-old and undoubtedly at his physical prime. At his best, he is fast, strong in the air and tackles brilliantly.
The heart of the matterManchester United have lacked a commanding centerback who would intimidate the opposition since the retirement of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. Eric Bailly has emerged as someone who looks capable of taking on the mantle, but the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have not established themselves despite being at the club for a long time.
He might attract a world record fee, but at 24-years-old he is a brilliant investment.
What’s Next?Manchester United are still unsure of playing in the Champions League, they’re fifth in the League one point behind Manchester City (who are in fourth). They are also in the Europa League semifinal, and if they win the tournament, will end up with a Champions League spot.
A Champions League spot will help a lot in the process of convincing big names to join the English giants, as Antoine Griezmann’s agent attested.
Author’s TakeIt is undoubtedly a huge coup for Jose Mourinho if he manages to convince the French international to join the League cup holders. But, for Real Madrid it doesn’t make a lot of sense selling Varane even though the price tag seems to be a difficult one to turn down.
From a personal point of view, Varane has played his best games under the tutelage of the Portuguese and it does make sense for him to move to Old Trafford. However, that might mean the end of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling at Old Trafford.
